Law Commission Symposium on Enfranchisement Reform University College London - 5th November 2018

Law Commission Symposium on Enfranchisement Reform University College London - 5th November 2018

Following the publication of their Consultation Paper, ‘Leasehold home ownership: buying your freehold or extending your lease’, on 20 September 2018, the Law Commission is holding a one-day symposium to be held at the Faculty of Law, University College London, on 5 November 2018.

The Consultation Paper sets out provisional proposals for a root-and-branch reform of the law of enfranchisement, including the introduction of a new, single enfranchisement regime for leaseholders of houses and flats. It also examines options to reduce the price payable by leaseholders.

The event is an opportunity for discussion on the proposed reforms to the law of enfranchisement. Yashmin Mistry, Partner and Head of JPC’s Property Practice Group has accepted an invitation from the Law Commissioner to sit with a panel of experts to give her views on the reforms and contribute to a debate covering the following areas:

• What should the enfranchisement rights be?
• Who should be entitled to exercise those rights?
• How should those rights be exercised?
• What should it cost to enfranchise?

The day promises to be an informative event, and coming in the midst of the Governments’ consultation on Implementing reforms to the leasehold system in England, is an opportunity to shape the changes in this important area of law.
